Great Barrier Island (Aotea) is located 90 kilometres north east of Auckland. Just over 4 hours by ferry and 30 minutes by plane. 

Great Barrier Island lies in the outer Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand. With an area of 285 square kilometres (110 square miles) it is the sixth largest Island of New Zealand and fourth largest in the main chain. Its highest point, Mt Hobson is 621 metres (2,037 ft) above sea level. The local authority is the Auckland Council. 

The Island, is inhabited by around 940 people, mostly living from farming and tourism. Primarily in coastal settlements such as Tryphena, the largest settlement in Tryphena Harbour, at the southern end. Other communities are Okupu, Whangaparapara, Port Fitzroy, Claris and Kaitoke. There is no central power, and houses require their own generators. There is also extensive use of solar water heating, solar panels for electricity and wind powered generators. 

More than 60 per cent of Great Barrier Island is administered by the Department of Conservation (DOC).
