Fun history fact: Toss Woollaston settled in Mapua in 1934, where he built a small mud-brick house on what is now the Fairmont View subdivision. He lived their for 15-16 years. He married in 1936 and raised four children there. During this time, he worked as an orchardist to support his family, which meant he was exempted from military service, allowing him to continue painting. By 1980 Woollaston was perhaps New Zealand’s most widely known contemporary painter.
