82 Melville St was designed in 1911 by architect Arthur John Burnside who was also responsible for a number of other prominent buildings in the city. It was a merchant's house, once two separate apartments then home to a well known Dunedin artist before becoming a much loved family residence.

The house is surprisingly sunny with impressive city and harbour views from many of its nine rooms.

Most of the house's original features remain, including stained and coloured glass framed in fine woods. The enclosed rear garden is intimate and low maintenance.
