The former Melrose Private Hospital in Ngāruawāhia is thought to have been built by Dr David Martin soon after 1920. In Ngāruawāhia Dr David Martin acquired a residential lot from local auctioneer JR Hetherington in August 1920; it appears he built a transitional bungalow for use as a private hospital soon after. Martin (circa 1893-1949) had been excused military service in January 1917 because he was the only doctor in Ngāruawāhia at the time.
