There are homes you live in, and then there are homes that change the way you live.
The owners of this quiet corner of Remuera's northern slopes had a clear vision. They wanted a sanctuary. Not a showpiece. Somewhere to retreat and feel the city fall away. With clean lines, honest materials, and a silence that is palpable.
Here, the mornings arrive with intention. Full-height east-facing windows draw the first light directly into the living spaces and bedrooms. By afternoon, a considered western slot of glazing holds the last of the sun. This is a home that was designed around the light, and the light knows it.
Privacy was never an afterthought. The streetscape reveals almost nothing - a composed, low-slung form that sits quietly amongst its neighbours, respectful of the character of Bell Road. Inside is another story entirely.
Kamermans Architects were given a demanding brief and delivered something remarkable. The house earned a First Award at the Urban Design & Architecture Design Awards 2018, and a Trends Design Awards commendation for the kitchen.
A simple two-storey form belies the sophistication of the thinking. Open-plan living beneath tall, sarked ceilings, anchored with warm timber floors, pale walls, and the valley stretching out in front of you. Upper-level garage, study, and living open effortlessly to a sheltered north-facing deck. Lower-level bedrooms - three in total, two soulful bathrooms, and a large media room/4th bedroom - each enjoy level access to the outdoors. The garden wraps. The neighbours can't see in. The sky is enormous.
This is Remuera living at its finest - in a position that's rarely relinquished.
Take a breath, close your eyes, and step in. This one is different.
