There is a point along the meandering driveway where something quietly changes. The air cools. The forest leans in. Ordinary noise fades, replaced by wings, water and wind. The owners have always called this place Kereru and like any place that earns a name, it feels less owned than discovered.

Spanning approximately 14.13 hectares, Kereru is a self contained world: part forest sanctuary, part private expedition ground, part retreat. Held in the same guardianship for 25 years and managed with organic intent, the land has been allowed to become what it wants to be. The result feels remarkably like a private national park, hidden in plain sight.

Ancient rimu and hard beech rise from the slopes, some believed to be centuries old, while younger podocarps and beeches knit the canopy beneath them. The forest feels layered and alive, drawing you inward. To the west, the boundary dissolves into a 100 acre uninhabited QEII covenanted bush reserve, extending the sense that Kereru has no edge, only continuation.

Birdlife is constant, not incidental. Kereru move through the trees with weight and confidence. Tui and Bellbirds thread sound through the day. Robins, Tomtits, Weka, Ruru and even falcons appear often enough to feel like residents rather than visitors. With a native plant nursery supporting regeneration and nearly five kilometres of mapped walking and riding tracks crossing streams and forest clearings, the land invites wandering for its own sake.
Deeper in the bush comes the moment that seals it.

Hidden away, elevated and perfectly placed, is the tramping hut, a true hut, not a novelty. Solar lit, supplied with roof water, bunk beds and a long drop toilet, it feels exactly like something you would expect to find at the end of a DOC track, except this one is yours. From here, the valley opens below, mist curls through the trees at dawn, and silence becomes a presence.

The main residence sits apart but in sympathy with the land, elevated for western range views and year round sun. Approximately 100m² in size, the one bedroom home (with additional office) is wrapped in a covered deck that allows life to spill outdoors in almost any weather. Modern comforts are integrated rather than imposed: double glazing, heat pump, woodburner with wetback, grid connected solar panels, solar hot water, filtered stream and roof water, excellent tank storage, Wi Fi, and two toilets, one with a little personality.

Scattered through the landscape are outposts rather than extras: a discreet self contained guest cottage near the entrance, a studio or office for creative or remote work, a substantial powered workshop, and a potting shed. Each adds function without breaking the spell.
And despite the seclusion, the wider world remains close, approximately 15 minutes to Motueka and under an hour to Nelson Airport.
For those who have always suspected another world might exist just off the beaten track, 22 Herring Stream offers proof that sometimes, it does.
