Just over an hour north-west of Whanganui, this is country far removed from the pace of modern life. The property comprises 774 hectares (more or less) on a single freehold title, with legal access by way of an easement over a neighbouring property.

The land is predominantly steep hill country, its ridges and valleys cloaked in bush that has stood for centuries. Towering rimu and northern rātā rise above a canopy of tawa and kāmahi, while black beech holds the narrow ridgelines. This is an enduring remnant of the native forest that once blanketed much of the wider region.

An established network of tracks leads through the forest to a secluded hut at the heart of the block. The deeper the tracks take you, the further the outside world recedes, until nothing remains to suggest it exists. Beds of fern lie in dappled light beneath the canopy. The dawn chorus is loud with tūī, korimako, kererū, and ruru call through the night, and kiwi are known to be present in the wider catchment.

For some, the draw is privacy and the freedom to hunt and explore. For others, it is the chance to hold native forest of lasting ecological importance, as the value of biodiversity becomes ever more widely recognised. Whether kept as a private retreat or for conservation, this is a forest of both scale and significance, and one of the few places left where New Zealand can still be seen as it once was.
