Raised on the waters of Tauranga Moana, Huia Woods-Smith returned home from Western Australia in late 2024, bringing with her a world-class background in land rights and a deep, lifelong connection to the local community. Huia offers a unique blend of high-level legal strategy and a heartfelt commitment to local people.

Huia grew up in Greerton attending Tauranga Intermediate School and Tauranga Girl’s College before completing undergraduate degrees in Arts and Law. Huia practiced land law, specialising conveyancing and subdivisions in Wanganui and later returned to her alma mater as a Law Lecturer while completing a research project on indigenous rights in mining.

In 2011, Huia commenced a new role in Western Australia negotiating landowner rights and access agreements on behalf of aboriginal owners in the Pilbara and Yamatji regions. Her successful negotiations with the Federal Government and State Government led to the settlement of native title claims providing stability and certainty in these regions.

Huia values connection and community and has returned to Tauranga with her four children and husband, Ike. She can often be found at Waikorire on the water or at Mercury Baypark on the basketball court coaching or in some way contributing.
